What a bricklayer does

A bricklayer does the building work: putting up and knocking down partition walls, tiling walls and floors, fixing cracks and damp and getting everything ready for the plumber, electrician and painter. They are hired by the day or by the job, and the gap between collective-agreement pay and the price of a single day is wide.

Emergency: what to do until the bricklayer arrives

Building emergencies are usually a trade that drops out mid-job or damage that has to be closed up now: a hole, a wall opened after a leak, some displaced roof tiles. Before you call, define the task — what needs doing and what does not — and have measurements and photos to hand. If the work affects the structure or the façade, you will need a licence or prior notice to the town hall, however urgent it is.
