What a carpenter does

A carpenter makes, fits and repairs anything made of wood or board: doors, built-in wardrobes, kitchens, floating floors, skirting boards and made-to-measure furniture. Many also do the fine adjustments nobody else does: a door that sticks, a sagging hinge or a drawer that will not close.

Most requested jobs for a carpenter

  • Adjusting or replacing a door

Planing a door that sticks or replacing hinges and handles takes a single visit. Replacing the whole door with its frame is a full day.

  • Assembling furniture and kitchens

Fitting flat-pack kitchens, wardrobes and shop-bought furniture, adjusted to walls that are never quite square.

  • Made-to-measure built-in wardrobes

Measuring, workshop manufacture and fitting. This is the job where it pays most to get the cutting list and type of board in writing.

  • Flooring and skirting boards

Laying floating floors, replacing skirting boards or repairing boards lifted by damp.

Emergency: what to do until the carpenter arrives

Carpentry emergencies are usually a door that will not close or open, or a piece of furniture that has come away from the wall. If the front door will not close, the first thing is to secure it; if the problem is the lock rather than the wood, what you need is a locksmith. For everything else, photos and measurements help the carpenter turn up with the right part.
