What a plumber does

A plumber installs and repairs everything that carries water in a home or business: pipes, taps, drains, toilets and basins, water heaters and boilers. Most call-outs are small faults fixed in a single visit, so what weighs most on the bill is the call-out fee and the time of day you ring.

  • Replacing a tap

    A single-lever kitchen or basin mixer. Between 70 and 270 € depending on the tap and whether the flexible hoses need replacing; if you have already bought the tap, labour is around an hour.

  • Unblocking a sink, basin or toilet

    With a machine or a plunger, between 70 and 170 €. If the blockage is in the shared soil stack, the community of owners pays, not you.

  • Fixing a leak

    From around 70 € if it is a seal or a fitting; between 150 and 200 € if a section of pipe has to be replaced and the wall opened up.

  • Replacing an electric water heater

    Between 180 and 600 € including the heater, depending on capacity and brand. Taking away the old one should be included in the price.

Emergency: what to do until the plumber arrives

If water is coming out, first shut off the main stopcock — usually in the kitchen, next to the meter or on the landing — and switch off the power if the water is getting near sockets. Take photos of the damage and call your home insurer before paying for an emergency visit: many policies cover both the leak repair and the damage. With the stopcock off, almost everything can wait until the morning without a night-time surcharge.
